This week's playlist celebrates the sexy jazz-funk of Henry Mancini, the man responsible for one of the greatest, most famous pieces of music in the world: the score of Bill Cosby's Ghost Dad.
OK, fine. This week's playlist celebrates the sexy jazz-funk of Henry Mancini, the man who will forever be known as the Pink Panther guy.
I'm hearing this Saturday treat on the following Friday. It is as usual well chosen. Hearing Mancini works together I am struck by how often he uses dramatic and complex percussion as the foundation of his compositions followed by a simple catchy bass line. The melody goes on top of all that, with woodwind, brass and strings taking turns. It makes ideal movie music. I wonder if he matched his music to picture or if it was the other way round. He won 4 Oscars and 16 other awards. He wrote music for 277 productions in all. What a fabulous career.
