Saturday Playlist #4: Michael Giacchino

This week's orchestral orgy comes courtesy of Pixar and JJ Abrams regular and spelling pedants' nightmare Michael Giacchino, best known for being the film composer most often confused for an overpriced coffee.

There's no point in me explaining who he is and what he's done while Wikipedia still exists, so do head over there and edumacate yourselves. But before you do...

SATURDAY PLAYLIST #4:
MICHAEL GIACCHINO

Disclaimer: This playlist includes an abridged version of Giacchino's monstrously majestic masterpiece "Roar!", composed for the end credits of Cloverfield, because the full twelve-minutes-and-nineteen-seconds leviathan isn't on Spotify. You can get it on iTunes though and I wholly recommend doing so as fast as your wallet will allow.

  1. The score to "up" and his work on "lost" mean he never has to apologise for anything in his life.

  2. What if you were in a lift with him and he farted?

  3. OMG you gotta love The Incredits from the Incredibles, so groovy man, feel that beat, Yeah!
The Lost end theme reminds me a little of the Planet of the Apes soundtrack by Goldsmith. Nice!

  4. Marge has some good names there. Listen to spotify:track:7xPojYzUO8w1aAYBQpNnbe and compare with 'Cloverfield - roar.' Wagner's influence is clearly there.
    Compare spotify:track:7nQDhnmAehKE8rOv6Pj5Jz with Giaccino's 'Married'.
All composers 'borrow' Ideas from each other. It is fun to spot tham.
Compare spotify:track:69SB5imYSe9qeJ3rHaJMsG with '100 Rat Dash'.

Did I mention Wagner? He has more film music credits than any other composer.

  5. Compare 'Factory Rescue' with 'The Pink Panther Theme'spotify:track:4rvDpmsHT5F6WTZIA8sEdl
Compare 'The Incredits' with spotify:track:3tFp2pQQOR5FrRHemEDIGf 'The Man From Uncle'

Lost is about the only track where Giacchino has a track that sounds entirely original.

  6. Tony, if you mention Wagner again I'm going to Ride over your Valkyries at high speed.

  7. It is not my fault if you Spotify a track that is similar to the prelude to Das Rheingold.
